Thanks for the Dance – The Leonard Cohen Story.

Cohen Unlimited is a group of professional Irish musicians which was formed by Robert Doyle (singer and guitarist) and Fergal Canterbury (electric and Spanish guitar, and musical director) to create an incredible show called ‘Thanks for the Dance’ – The Leonard Cohen Story.

The show features the poems and songs of legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Frontman Robert Doyle tells stories and anecdotes between the songs about Cohen’s life, the story behind the songs, and about meeting Cohen. The stage is set like Cohen’s last world tour and features a visual display of his life running in the background.

Barring Rob, who now lives in Spain, the band members are lifelong musicians based in Wicklow Town, from backing singers Louise Jameson and Jhil Quinn, through violinist Enid Conaghan, bassist Ben Dunne, drummer Keith Pogue, and keyboard player Chiara Brown, to musical director and lead guitarist, Fergal Canterbury.

Wicklow-born frontman Robert Doyle, who has done charity shows for forty years, turned professional the week he got his pension in September 2021. Robert has sung Cohen songs since discovering him at the age of fourteen and met Leonard Cohen in 1979 after attending his concert in Zurich. When Cohen was chatting with Robert and discovered he sang his songs, Cohen asked him to sing for him and the band.

Cohen Unlimited has sold out every performance, from Galway to Wexford, Dundalk, Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny, Ennis and Waterford. In March 2025, Cohen Unlimited sold out Ireland’s most famous theatre, The Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, with a capacity of 1,245. The show is now enjoying its fourth year at the Theatre Royal, Waterford.

Cohen Unlimited’s show Thanks for the Dance is two-and-a-half hours of stunning entertainment which will keep Cohen’s fans enthralled. In an emotive twist of fate, the band has the incredible honour of performing songs from Cohen’s final two albums, albums he himself never got to perform to a live audience before he passed away in 2016.
